Indo-Swiss signed Agreements on Immigration

On 6thof October, 2016 India and Switzerland signed three agreements on visa exemption, arrangement for dependent persons of diplomatic and consular mission to perform gainful employment and return of the illegal migrants.

In the meeting with Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh and Swiss Confederation’s visiting Minister of Justice and Police, Simonetta Sommargua, has signed the immigration agreement.

The agreement included three issues related to visa exemption for the holders of diplomatic passports, identification of illegal migrants and returning them to their home countries, and arrangement for dependent people of diplomatic, consular, technical and administrative staff of diplomatic and consular mission to perform gainful employment. 

The Union Minister, Rajnath Singh also proposed in the meeting to set up training facilities for Indian Police Officers in the Switzerland police academies or institutes to train Indian officers in the areas of anti-hijacking and cyber- crimes. He also mentioned that country is dealing with corruption issues related to black money and so expects cooperation from Switzerland regarding information related to exchange of tax so as to tackle the black money issues of corruption in the country.

The Union Minister also wanted a more liberalised visa system for the Indian business folks, as India is offering multiple entry visas to the Swiss businesses in order to improve the trade and investments between the two countries.

 The meeting was focussed on developing productive Indo-Swiss relations, and various other issues were also discussed which included, “cooperation in transfer of convicted, sentenced persons and mutual legal assistance treaty in criminal matters that would help in combating terrorism, transnational organised crimes and corruption, including money filtering”.
